Floating Markets and Fruit Orchards: Exploring the Mekong Delta in May
The Mekong Delta, affectionately known as the "Rice Bowl" of Vietnam, is a mesmerizing, sprawling maze of wide rivers, narrow canals, dense swamps, lush islands, and vibrant greenery located in the deep south of the country. It produces over half of Vietnam's rice and fruit output. Exploring this highly aquatic region offers a glimpse into a traditional, rural way of life that has remained unchanged for generations.
Why May is a Fantastic Time to Visit
May is the transitional month in the South, sitting right between the peak dry season and the wet monsoon season. While it is undoubtedly hot, May is a spectacular time to visit because it marks the beginning of the great tropical fruit harvest.
Must-Do Experiences in the Delta
- Visit the Floating Markets (Cai Rang): The absolute highlight of the Delta. You must wake up before dawn and take a small wooden boat out to the Cai Rang floating market near Can Tho. Witness hundreds of boats actively trading fresh produce on the water. Sellers tie their goods to tall bamboo poles to advertise what they are selling. It is chaotic, colorful, and a photographer's dream.
- Taste the Exotic Orchards: Because May kicks off the fruit season, a visit to a local orchard is mandatory. You will have the chance to wander through the trees and taste incredibly fresh, exotic fruits like rambutan, mangosteen, dragon fruit, and the infamous, pungent durian directly from the source.
- Row Through the Mangroves: Take a traditional, hand-rowed sampan boat through the narrow, shaded canals of Ben Tre (the coconut capital) or My Tho, surrounded by dense water coconut palms.
Logistical Planning
Most travelers initiate their Mekong Delta tours from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). You can book a 1-day express tour, but we highly recommend a 2-day/1-night trip with a homestay experience in Can Tho to truly absorb the atmosphere and see the floating market at sunrise.
Ensure your initial entry into HCMC is as smooth as possible by checking your visa requirements early. If you need a visa, submit your application through our E-visa portal well in advance. To beat the intense southern heat and the crowds upon landing at Tan Son Nhat airport, consider booking our VIP Airport Fast Track and private car transfer directly to your hotel in District 1.
